Building Neuro-Inclusive workplaces

1. Unlocking Enormous Potential: How Australian Spatial Analytics Enables a Neurodiverse Workforce
Geoffrey Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Spatial Analytics

Australian Spatial Analytics (ASA) is a work-integrated, not-for-profit social enterprise on a mission to revolutionise the big data sector. ASA’s story began in 2020 with a simple yet powerful observation: the potential of young neurodivergent adults was vastly underestimated and underutilised. ASA saw a world where their unique strengths in data analytics could be harnessed to address critical skill shortages in technology-based industries.

However, significant barriers existed, including archaic recruitment practices and a lack of inclusive workplaces that could empower these talented people to shine. For example, autistic Australians face a staggering 34% unemployment rate. Through tailored on-the-job professional and personal training, ASA empowers its 80% neurodivergent workforce to develop their skills and confidence, eventually transitioning them into sustainable and fulfilling careers within ASA or partner organisations.

Key to this success is ASA’s focus on collaboration. ASA works closely with Disability Employment Services, all levels of government and industry clients, providing a skilled and reliable workforce while addressing Australia’s data needs and helping deliver Australia’s critical infrastructure, all while creating social impact. To date, ASA has provided careers for over 220 young neurodivergent adults, with many transitioning their employment to other inclusive organisations.

This presentation will show how any organisation can harness the immense potential of a neurodiverse workforce, paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous future.

2. Creating Neuro-Inclusive Workplaces: Practical Lessons from the Frontline
Aron Mercer, Chief Growth Officer, Xceptional Academy

Xceptional Academy is a market leader supporting organisations across Australia to build safe, inclusive, and productive workplaces where neurodivergent employees can thrive. In this session, Aron Mercer (he/him) shares insights from working with thousands of HR professionals, people leaders, and executives across government, corporate, and disability sectors.

Over the past two years, there is a marked shift in how organisations approach neuro-inclusion. More employers are recognising they already have neurodivergent staff—often in greater numbers than expected—and are actively seeking ways to create safer, more supportive work environments.

This talk highlights practical, easy-to-implement changes that leading organisations are making across the employee lifecycle—from attraction and recruitment to onboarding and retention. These practical changes not only support neurodivergent employees, but also lead to stronger team engagement, performance, and wellbeing for everyone. With a focus on real-world examples, attendees will walk away with clear steps they can take to embed neuro-inclusion into their own workplaces.

With over 25 years of experience across corporate leadership, non-profits, and social enterprise, Aron brings both strategic insight and lived experience. His current PhD research, Investigation into the Experience of Neurodivergent Employees: Disclosure in the Workplace and Mental Wellbeing, explores how disclosure decisions are shaped by the employee lifecycle, an individual’s neurodivergent identity and workplace culture. Aron’s upcoming second book, The Cost of Concealment: Why Some Employees Hide Their Identity, and Why That’s Bad for Organisations, builds on this research.

Aron holds degrees from Macquarie University and Swinburne, with executive education from Stanford and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
