The Next Steps in Supported Employment

This presentation from the Department of Social Services will provide an overview of employment options and available supports for people with disability with high support needs to find and retain a job. It will outline recent reforms and details of the current public consultation and submission process ‘Next Steps in Supported Employment’.  A Panel discussion will follow, led by Elly Desmarchelier as MC, with panellists Dr Jenny Crosbie, Mathew McIntyre and Peter Bacon, discussing key questions raised in the ‘Next Steps in Supported Employment’ consultation paper.

Alex Buckley

Alex Buckley

Branch Manager, Disability Employment Policy, Department of Social Services

Alex Buckley is the Branch Manager, Disability Employment Policy within the Department of Social Services.

Alex’s role includes policy development, program management and implementation of employment supports for people with disability. She brings to the role a wealth of experience across the public sector, particularly in employment and industry focused policy reform.

Recently Alex’s team have leveraged a wealth of stakeholder consultation and public reviews to develop policy for Inclusive Employment Australia and establish the Centre of Inclusive Employment. Work is underway to assist the supported employment sector evolve to increase the range of employment opportunities and pathways for people with high support needs. This includes greater advocacy and information regarding employment rights and options for people with disability.

Alex was previously responsible for apprenticeship policy and recently directed the Strategic Review of the Australian Incentive System, supporting Dr Iain Ross AO and Lisa Paul AO PSM. Her experience spans various policy, program and corporate roles. She is passionate about evidence-based policy and working with users and across stakeholders to improve services and deliver better outcomes for job seekers and employers.

Bridget Anyon

Ms Bridget Anyon is the Director within the Disability Employment Policy Branch with responsibility for Supported Employment Policy in the Department of Social Services.

Ms Anyon has worked on social policy in Australia and abroad since 1998, including roles in government and in the non-government sector.

Ms Anyon is passionate about improving the lives of Australian’s through improving policies and programs that impact children, families and Australian’s impacted by disability.

Ms Anyon has more than 20 years experience working on policies and programs in the Australian Government. Ms Anyon has Bachelor of Arts (Policy Studies) from the Australian National University. Ms Anyon has worked in wide variety roles throughout her career, including Director roles leading teams through policy and program reform activities across a range of sectors including family policy and programs, the National Disability Insurance Scheme mainstream interface (health, mental health and child protection), children’s policy, welfare reform policy and payments, income management, housing policy (including indigenous housing), homelessness accreditation and legislation, child care and most recently in disability employment.

Jenny Crosbie

Senior Research Fellow, Swinburne University

Dr Jenny Crosbie is the Interim Director of the Centre for Inclusive Employment. Jenny has over 35 years experience in the disability sector, including frontline service, service management, policy and research roles. Jenny has a particular interest in developing research that is practice informed and translating research into practice. Jenny is also interested in improving employment opportunities for people with developmental disability and those who are excluded from the labour market.

Mathew McIntyre

Mathew is a proud First Nations man having extensive experience working across the Disability and Employment Service Sector. Prior to joining The Disability Trust, Mathew has held senior management and executive leadership roles across regional, state and national footprints where he was responsible for leading high-performing teams, developing emerging leaders and implementing strategic change initiatives.

Mathew prides himself on creating an environment of collaboration and equality in delivering excellence in service delivery with strong collaborations with participants, families and external community support services to ensure he delivers real outcomes that meet the needs and choices of the participants we support.
